Drinking and smoking (cigarettes, marijuana) at parties, big deal?

I don’t enjoy drinking or smoking.

But part of me wants to like it. actually.

“what the hell? you WANT to like drinking because you can’t?”
no, because currently it tastes like liquid horseshit.
(I used to like the smell of tobacco. now it stinks.)

I don’t need to drink to have fun, but my peers always make a big deal like “yeah, party at so-and-so’s!” “bring your own beer” “getting wasted tonight!”

Personally I think it’s stupid, the build up to the party is bigger than the actual thing, plus it’s not my scene.

But I still want in. it’s dumb, I know. I guess it’s the feeling included part, but I still feel isolated. I mean, it’s not like I talk and bond with ALL those people.

I still don’t understand my own peers obsession with drinking. nothing wrong with getting a beer, but aiming to get drunk ass wasted? I want to drink, but I don’t like it. And I don’t like doing stuff I don’t like.

I’d much rather just chill with (one of) my circles of friends, but I still always say stuff like “pfft I’m taking vodka, you can have my beer” “hahaha we’ll get you drunk honey, then everyone looks beautiful” and ACT impressed when people tell me “omg I was soo drunk, I still had to climb the tree to my window” “I was playing beer pong in my naughty nurse costume, it was soo funny” “like 10 of us were puking in the toilet” [meanwhile I go: "hahaha omg no way that's so funny!"]
I’m always offered alcohol by my family (parents, aunts, uncles, etc.) so it’s not a huge deal to me. But at parties it is. And it’s supposedly fun, which it is! but so is every other time spent with friends.

What’s the deal? Some people won’t hang out unless there’s drinking ["are we drinking?" "bored, wanna get drunk at the park?"]

I understand, but I don’t understand!

I just want to know if even though we say the same stuff, do they really believe it? or are they just saying it, like me?

Chosen Answer:

Congrats! You are actually an individual instead of a sheep following the herd. I wish I had been that way when I was young. It took me nearly two years of getting drunk, throwing up, and feeling like crap after before I finally realized I didn’t need that stuff to have a great time. In fact I had a much better time without it.

Mind you I still drink. I have a 21 year old bottle of Scotch in my closet I dig out every year or two and have a single shot out of it because I just like the taste of that stuff.

You are not a crowd. You are you. Do what makes you happy.
